Solomon Islands: Savo Island – Megapode Birds
This one is a bit out there – megapode birds. Megapodes are endemic jungle birds living on Solomon Islands. They are roughly half the size of chicken, pitch black, and very skittish, flying away with any attempt to approach. On Savo island, people made a megapode field with holes dugout from volcanic sand, where birds come and lay eggs nightly. And locals collect and eat them. Almost twice the size of a chicken egg (how does that come out from a small bird?), they are almost 100 percent yolk and no white. And tastes different from chicken, as I had one boiled for me.
