Somalia: Drying Shark Meat
One of the rocky piers in the harbor of Mogadishu is covered with what looks like elongated brown bricks amid an overpowering stench. This is the area where the salted shark meat is being dried on the hot Somali sun. The huge sharks are carved up into strips and salted (all by hand) and then laid out on the rocky ground. Sounds appetizing? Well, apparently most somali don’t eat shark meat and the dried shark is exported to neighboring Kenya in huge volumes.
