Somalia: Old Harbor in Mogadishu
As the capital of the colonial Somaliland under Italian control, Mogadishu was once known as the White Pearl of the Indian Ocean with amazing beaches and the beautiful harbor area. Years of unrelenting civil war have thoroughly wiped it all out. The harbor area is relatively safe, protected by multiple checkpoints – and it is a sight of the ocean waves slowly eroding whatever human-built structures remain. The old waterfront is almost all but a series of rocks now where locals fish. The ground is covered with a thick layer of trash and drying fish and the smell is brutal.
