South Africa/FS: Golden Gate Highlands NP – Watsonia Lepida aka Bugle Lily
The beautiful grasslands of the Golden Gate Highlands NP were full of wildflowers in the middle of the southern summer (given the elevation above sea level). One species definitely stood out – the pink-colored tall lily-like plants – Watsonia Lepida – endemic to this area. The plant only grows at the elevations above 1500-2000 m, it is dormant for most of the year, and the shoot out during the spring and summer. The genus name Watsonia is named Sir William Watson, an 18th-century British botanist. The plant is also commonly known as Bugle Lily (although it is usually meant for the similar species from the Cape).
