Spain/Andalusia: Algeciras
Moving on with Spain. Algeciras is not on any travel guides or recommendations. It’s just a busy transfer point right next to the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s is from here that countless ferries plow the narrow 40km Straight of Gibraltar into Morocco. Most of Algeciras is just that – outskirts of a port. But a small old town square in the heart of the town is absolutely beautiful Plaza Alta. There is an amazing mosaic-clad fountain in the middle with mosaic walls and mosaic benches. Two churches also face the square as do about half a dozen open-air cafes. A bit further out in town there are also ruins of a Roman forum. And definitely come back to square at night when it’s beautifully illuminated.
