Spain/Castille & Leon: Avila – Exploring Avila
There’s a lot to see inside the walled city in Avila – beyond the cathedral – there are tons of churches, museums, narrow streets, and just random roaming around the medieval old town. Not to be missed is the Basilica of San Vicente, just outside the town walls beyond the Puerta de San Vicente, built in the 12th century, very ornate inside and full of Romanesque, baroque, and gothic treasures. Convento de Santa Teresa de Jesus is another treasure – dating back to 1636 with an ultra lavishly decorated chapel inside. Also must-visit are Museum of Avila, Plaza Mayor, and Barrio Judio aka Jewish Quarter.
