Spain/Castilla y Leon: Leon – Santa María de León Cathedral
One of the most spectacular cathedrals in the world, the Leon Cathedral doesn’t fail to impress. Two huge towers – Torre de las Campanas and Torre del Reloj – reach sky-high above the square in the heart of Leon . The cathedral was built in the 12-14th century and was influenced by the French cathedrals in Reims and Amiens (I wonder why I was experiencing the dejavu feeling). The three doorways are richly decorated with biblical scenes, while the inside of the cathedral is even more stupendous – 1800 sq meters of stained glass windows! Throw in various religious treasures scattered all around the interior and it’s a total must see.
