Spain/La Rioja: San Milan de Yuso Monastery

San Milan de Yuso Monastery in La Rioja was built in the 11th century and later reconstructed in 16th. Yuso means “lower” in ancient Castilian and just a dozen km west is the Suso Monastery aka “upper” (currently under the construction). Yuso is a significant cultural and historical site, often called the “Escorial of La Rioja” due to its grandeur. It features a mix of architectural styles, primarily Renaissance and Baroque. It’s a fully functional monastery up to this date and visiting is only a few days a week and the tourist fully in Spanish.
