Spain/Navarre: Uxue Fortified Church
Imagine a hill rising above the surrounding country side that is packed with medieval houses with narrow cobblestone streets rising steeply toward the top where a 12th century fortified church stands like a sentinel of time? That’s the town of Uxue in Navarre. The Romanesque Santa Maria de Uxue is almost impenetrable with thick walls, watchtowers and few windows. The inside is equally medieval – dark and empty and spooky.
