Spain/Valencia: Requena
70km west from Valencia, lies the medieval town of Requena, an absolute gem of a town and totally off the beaten track of tourists. The old town used to be a Moorish citadel with square towers and thick defensive walls – a lot of the fortifications still remain. Inside – it feels more like casbah layout of Morocco or Tunis with narrow twisting streets, whitewashed buildings, and balconies overhanging the streets. Besides the Moorish citadel, there are two ancient churches dating back to the 13th century – with beautiful unrestored facades. You almost feel like you travelled in time here.
