Sri Lanka: Colombo Fort
Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and the core of the city is known as the Fort. When Ceylon was Dutch, they built an extensive fortification here to protect from both sea and land attacks. After British acquired the island from the Dutch, they demolished the fort’s walls and built classic British colonial architecture. Most of these grand British buildings still remain (Brits clearly build stuff to last) – the President’s House, Parliament, Grand Oriental Hotel, Old Lighthouse, historical Cargills/De Mell/Lloyd’s buildings, Old Dutch Hospital, and many more. The area is compact and easy to explore and some great restaurants are all here.
