Sri Lanka: Dambulla Cave Temples

This place was incredible and I am not sure the pictures can do it justice. There is a massive rock towering above the surrounding plateau in the center of Sri Lanka and on top of the rock there are five fairly deep caves that have been turned into temples centuries ago. The caves hold over 150 Buddha statues and the walls and ceilings have amazing paintings throughout, most dating to the 10th century! The largest central cave is just stunning and you feel like you starring in a remake of Indiana Jones or Mummy – the low ceiling above you is bursting with colorful prehistoric otherworldly paintings while you are surrounded by statues staring at you from all directions, ready to come alive.
