Sri Lanka: Kaudulla National Park
Kaudulla and the nearby Minneriya national parks are renowned for their massive elephant herds, sometimes over 100 strong. The elephants tend to stick together and in dry season and particularly in the afternoon heat congregate near the water sources (both parks have large artificial lakes/tanks built by a Sri Lankan King in the 11th century). There is really no point driving around the park but rather stay in one spot and observe elephants. They approach safari vehicles quite close and seem quite tolerant of the dozens on onlookers.
