Sri Lanka: Polonnaruwa (northern sites)
The northern sites in Polonnaruwa have less ruins to them but rather grander monument and structures. There are two large ancient dagobas (stupas) – 54m high Rankoth Vehera (fourth largest in Sri Lanka) and built in the 12th century and smaller Kiri Vihara. Then there are the remains of the Lankatilaka Temple with a giant statue inside. Finally, there is a group of amazing Buddha statues – reclining, sitting, standing – made from multi-toned rocks.
