Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan Wild Boar
So the leopards didn’t show up in Yala National Park, but the Sri Lankan wild boars more than made up for that. Over 3 dozen of them were rampaging in the grass along the roads and near the water holes. These are a unique Sri Lankan species, someway similar in appearance to the common European wild boar, albeit smaller and slender. Their only predator here is the leopard. The wild boar performs the role similar to that of hyena in Africa – they are the biggest scavengers on the island and eat pretty much everything, including the stuff leopards leave out. They also found an easy way of getting food – bring the whole pig family out to the park entrance and go one safari vehicle to another with cute baby piglets bound to receive fruits and other food.
