Sri Lanka: Thularamaya Dagoba at Anuradhapura
This is the oldest dagoba (stupa) in Sri Lanka, it was built to commemorate the country’s acceptance of Buddhism and house Buddha’s collarbone. It was built in a shape of a bell and ever since all other Sri Lankan dagoba were constructed in a similar bulbous way. This is the most photographed monument at Anuradhapura – the central white dagoba is surrounded by two circles of ancient stone pillars and then a circular wall.
