Suriname: Paramaribo Central Market

Located along the banks of the Suriname River in the heart of Paramaribo, the Central Market is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This marketplace is a sensory explosion that represents the multicultural essence of Suriname, blending Dutch colonial influences with the traditions of its diverse population – Creole, East Indian, Javanese, and other). The market existed here since 1830s, but it was only in 1959, that a covered building housing 950 stalls was built here with the European Union money and timber imported from Europe (despite Suriname being full of timber). The most interesting part of the market is the fish section, but fruits and vegetables are equally colorful and unique.
