Suriname: Suriname Food Recap

Suriname cuisine is extremely diverse – it’s a mix representing all the different ethnic groups that were brought here during the colonial times by French, British, and Dutch colonizers. There are elements of Creole, Javanese, Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Jewish, British, French – you name it. Staple dishes include roti (flatbread) with chicken curry and long beans; pom, a baked casserole of grated tayer root, citrus-marinated chicken, and tomato-onion sauce; saoto, a clear Javanese soup with chicken, glass noodles, bean sprouts, egg, and fried shallots; and bara, a deep-fried lentil-flour donut served with spicy chutney.
