Sweden: Stockholm – Drottningholm Palace
It’s not technically in Stockholm, it’s half an hour outside in the woods. It’s the private residence of the Royal family, sort of like a summer home. The castle was built in the 17th century and originally was a present of the king to the queen (once again – nice to be the king). It’s somewhat reminiscent of the palaces in Austria and Russia – opulent, over the top, lavish massive gardens, and floor after floor of ornate rooms decorated in gold and blues, with countless portraits of (rather ugly) royal family members. It’s spectacular all around in its excesses, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
