Switzerland: Swiss Alps – Town of Zermatt
Zermatt is the base ski resort town for the multiple ski area on the slopes and glaciers of the towering mountains above it. You can’t drive into Zermatt, you have to leave the car in a garage and take a train for 15 min. Once in town, the only means of transport are electric taxis. If you expect a cute Swiss town – this isn’t it – it’s expensive, kitschy, and packed with overpriced hotels and restaurants (SNB letting the Swiss frank float didn’t really help). There’s hardly any authentic food places, but plenty of good bars, souvenirs shops, and ski outfitters.
