Syria: Road to Palmyra
Going east from Homs is a long 250km drive through the flat desert landscape of central Syria to the ancient town of Palmyra and its spectacular UNESCO-listed archaeological site. This territory was under the control of ISIL for a long period and once defeated, they even managed to take it over again and bring even more destruction. ISIL entered Palmyra in May 2015, the Syrian government recaptured it in March 2016, then lost again to ISIL in December 2016, before finally liberating it four months later.
