Tajikistan/Gorno-Badakhshan: Karakol Lake
The desolate Karakul Lake (Black Lake) lies in a meteor impact crater in the heart of Pamir Mountains. As you walk along the rocky shores you can see the massive horns of the Marco Polo sheep who descend down to the lake in winter from the higher elevations around. Supposedly, wolves chase the sheep onto the ice where the sheep’s footing is unstable and then attack their pray.
