Tanzania: Ngorongoro Crater – Black Rhinos
lack rhinos are the hardest animal to see in Ngorongoro Crater, despite the relatively open terrain. They are skittish, hide in the few forests or trees, or lay down on the ground and become indistinguishable from buffaloes. All Of the rhinos in the crater are the critically endangered black rhinos (the species almost exterminated for their horns). Last time I was in Ngorongoro, I saw only one, and typical sighting is usually a couple rhinos maximum. But this is a lucky year for wildlife watching and with the crater virtually empty from tourists, we got super lucky to spot 11 rhinos – most in quite a distance, several moving fast across the crater and almost galloping, and one lying in relative proximity. Black rhinos are browsers, so they need bushes or trees. All the rhinos in Ngorongoro are under constant 24 hour camera surveillance and this protected 24/7. Thanks god!
