Tanzania: Ruaha NP – Agama Lizards
A common reptile in Africa – Agama lizard – cannot be confused with another species – the coloration is just out of this world and probably belongs someplace on Avatar planet. The lizard has fluorescent blue and violet colors and bright reds in the head. The coloring is supposedly to indicated to would be predators that the lizards are not edible and poisonous (which they are not). The agamas are very territorial and live in groups of a lead male (called a “cock”), about a dozen females, and several subordinate males. Only the cock gets to breed with females and the subordinate males need to fight with the cock for the title. The fights are frequent and quite vicious.
