Timor Leste: Balibo Fort
The town of Bolibo holds the Balibo Fort, which is nearly 400 years old. The fort is located on high grounds and surrounded by a thick wall, offering 360 panoramic views of the mountainous countryside. The fort actually saw some military action in 1975 when Indonesia invaded the then Portuguese Timor. It was the site of the killing of the “Balibo Five” Australian journalists, who were covering the invasion. Indonesia invaded after the Balibo Declaration was supposedly signed at the Balibo Fort by the pro-Indonesian rebels opposed to the Timor Leste independence and asking for Indonesia military interference. (This turned out to be false, the declaration was never signed in Balibo and was fabricated by Indonesian special intelligence services).
