Timor Leste: Liquica – Sao Joao de Brito Church
The Liquica Church aka Sao Joao de Brito Church in the town of Liquica is sadly associated with a horrible massacre that took place here in 1999 during the Timor Leste strive for independence. The massacre was orchestrated and executed by the Indonesian soldiers and Islamic rebels, trying to prevent the majority catholic population of Timor Leste to attain sovereignty. Around 200 people were killed here, including the priests, women, and children. Indonesia denied its military participation, but the UN investigation proved otherwise.
