Togo: Togoville
Togoville is the town on the northern shore of Lake Togo that gave the entire country its name – it was here in 1884 that the local chief signed the overlordship treaty with Germany (there is a rather lousy two-flag monument commemorating this). Otherwise Togo boast two attractions – voodoo shrines and the spectacular Cathedral. This is the heart of voodoo culture and there are several voodoo shrines in town with voodoo sculptures and sacrificial platforms. The Togoville Cathedral built in 1910 is a spectacular church with a separate belltower, amazing glass windows and frescos. Also, Virgin Mary apparently appeared here out of nowhere in 1970.
