Tonga/Vava‘u: Flying Over Vava’u Archipelago
Vavau is an archipelago in the nothern Tonga, consisting of one large and 40 small islands (the legend has it that the god Maui hooked something on the bottom of the sea and pulled it out to the surface, which became Vavau). Vavau islands and islets are of coral origin, but the reef is elevated here up to 200 feet above sea level. It’s a stunning panorama from the air – islands scatter to horizon with the sea of different colors in between them.
