Torres Strait Island: Thursday Island
Thursday Island aka TI as the locals call it is the biggest settlement in Torres Strait Islands. It’s a relatively small island and 1 hour by taxi got me to see all the attractions. The island is hilly and going uphill offers stunning 360 panorama of the surrounding islands. There are a bunch of different churches, aboriginal museums and monuments, nice promenade, several historic buildings, and a 19th century fort (next post). There are also a couple beaches where massive amount of turtles and dugongs (Oceania’s manatees) were slaughtered in the 20th century (supposedly, Churchill enjoyed his turtle soup that came from the turtles harvested in the Torres Strait). My aboriginal driver vividly described how white Europeans killed every marine mammal in sight in thousands, and sadly I am sure he was absolutely right.
