Transnistria: Transnistrian Plastic Coins
Transnistria is the only country in the world that uses plastic coins in circulation. The country’s currency is the Transnistrian ruble, with an unofficial symbol of PRB, and about 17 to one USD. There are traditional paper money and metal coins, but also composite plastic coins for 1/3/5/10 rubles. The color of the plastic coins is the same as the paper equivalents, but also the same as the original USSR rubles back in the days – yellow, green, blue, red – and feature portraits of various Russian historic figures connected to the history of the country, including Suvorov military commander and Catherine the Great. Finally, the plastic coins are all of different shapes – round, square, pentagonal, hexagonal.
