Until 2 years ago, no flamingoes had been spotted in the Caroni swamp, but since the first birds arrived, the population has been steadily growing. This is the Caribbean flamingo aka American flamingo or Phoenicopterus ruber (the only flamingo species known in North America. These are big birds (120 to 145 cm (47 to 57 in) tall) and quite colorful if they can filter feed on appropriate crustacean and shrimp diet of the swampy waters at Caroni.
