Tuamotu/Rangiroa: Feasting on Giant Clams
On a first look, it appeared like a whole family of locals was swimming and snorkeling and enjoying the paradise of the Ile aux Recif in the remote part of the Rangiroa atoll. But they were busy clamming – digging out maxima clams (a relative of the giant clams, but smaller size) from the coral reef, shacking them open and eating them right here on the beach with fresh lime. I couldn’t help but ask for a taste and they were happy to let me try a couple. They taste more like oysters then clams and given size – there’s plenty of food. Maxima giant clams are widely used for aquariums in the western world, but here in the Pacific they are a delicious food item.
