Tunisia: Ksar Hadada

The area of southern Tunisia (and neighboring Lybia) just at the edge of the Sahara sands has over 100 ksars in various states of preservation, some actively used to tho day. Ksar Hadada is another famous Ksar (fortified granary), this one is one of the largest with 675 ghorfas (vaulted storage rooms) arranged in a dense, horseshoe-shaped layout over three levels. These ghorfas, originally used to store grain and valuables, are made of mud brick with rounded roofs and geometric patterns. This was also one of the min locations that George Lucas used in 1997 to film scenes for Mos Espa of the planet of Tataouine – where Luke Skywalker was born (coincidentally, the Tunisian governorship that covers the area is actually really called Tataouine). The ksar is now part of Star Wars Route for tourists, and it actually has a hotel on premises so you can relive your movie memories.
