Tunisia: Ksar Ouled Soltane

Ksar Ouled Soltane was truly spectacular! It is another fortified granary located about 20 km south of Tataouine in southern Tunisia. Built in the 15th century, it’s one of the oldest and somehow very elaborate, it features two courtyards surrounded by up to four-story vaulted granary cellars, constructed from adobe for storing grain. It’s also a stunning location – on a hilltop for defense against raids, it originally housed around 400 ghorfas. It was really fun climbing these shaky unprotected ladders and balconies! Just like several other ksars, It also served as a filming location for the slave quarters of Mos Espa in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. In 2020, Tunisia proposed it for UNESCO World Heritage status.
