Tunisia: Sousse – Archaeological Museum

Everybody heard of the Bardo Museum in Tunis famous for its Roman mosaics, but not many people know that the second largest mosaic collection in the world is actually in Sousse at the Archaeological Museum of Sousse. It’s not just mosaics – the extensive collection at the museum includes also sculptures, and artifacts from the Punic, Roman, and Christian eras, primarily from the Sahel region of Tunisia. But the mosaics most certainly steal the show here – dating from the 2-4th centuries CE they are full of vibrant colors, intricate designs, and mythological and normal daily life and various Christian themes. The most famous mosaic scenes include Head of Medusa, Face of Oceanus, Neptune on His Sea-Chariot, Dionysiac Parties, and more.
