Turkey: Alahan Monastery
Alahan Monastery is an absolute hidden gem of central Turkey, tucked in high mountains and way off the main roads. The monastery was built in the 5th century, and it was a massive monastic complex and a pilgrimage site. The monastery included two churches, rock-cut cave chambers, a baptistery, living quarters for monks and pilgrims, necropolis, bathhouses, terraces and much much more. It’s all in ruined condition, but the ruins are stunning and spectacular, with carvings and engravings, and tombstones, and inscriptions. And all this is surrounded with panoramic mountain views. Alahan is a stunning example of early Byzantine architecture, way before Constantinople was even built. There are absolutely no tourists here, and once again you will feel like Indiana Jones looking for the Holy Grail in an abandoned ancient ruined city. How is this not a UNESCO World Heritage site – I don’t understand!
