Turkey: Cappadocia – Derinkuyu Underground City
The Derinkuyu underground city is an incredible multi-level underground city in Cappadocia. The levels go 60m / 200 ft deep and it is the largest underground city in Turkey, having housed over 20000 people at one time. The city dates back to the 8th century and was used as a sanctuary during the Byzantine-Arab wars when Christians hid here from the Muslim invasion. The city was abandoned for centuries but is currently being restored after it was rediscovered in 1963.
