Turkey: Cappadocia – Ortahisar Castle
The small town of Ortahisar ha another Cappadocia treasure – the stunning rock cut Ortahisar Castle. The castle is a natural rock rising from the ground 300ft/90m and full of rock cut passageways and rooms. Just like a lot of other rock-,cut architecture here, the castle served as a refuse for the Christian communities against the invading Arab and Persian armies during the late Byzantine times. You can climb all the always up to the top of the tower (not for the faint-hearted as the ladders and steps are exposed) for incredible views over the town below and the wider valley further out.
