Turkey: Dara – Ancient Cisterns
The ancient city of Dara holds the treasure that was only discovered and fully escalated within the last 5 years and only opened to public in 2018 – the underground water cisterns, dug deep underneath the desert floor. Similar to the world-famous Byzantine Basilica Cisterns in Istanbul – the Dara Cisterns are bigger, deeper, taller, and much more impressive. To be honest – they are absolutely mind-boggling and unlike anything I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen some cool stuff)). The underground chambers are enormous, 18 meters/55 feet deep with massive stone columns and 143,000 cubic feet of capacity. Descending down into the dark chambers, you totally expect to become part of the Fifth Element scene – it is so surreal!
