Turkey: Istanbul – Yerebatan Sarayi aka Basilica Cistern
Basilica Cistern is the largest underground water cistern in the ancient city of Istanbul aka Constantinople. The cistern dates back to the 6th century and was built by over 6000 slaves. It could hole 80,000 cubic m / 2,800,000 cubic ft of water. There are 336 columns supporting the ceiling and two column have medusa heads at their bottoms. The entire cistern is bathed in red and mysterious light.
