Turkey: Kutahya

Kutahya is one of the oldest towns in west-central Turkey, known is Byzantine times as Cotyaeum. But not much from those times remain, rather the attraction are mostly from the Ottoman times – a ruined castle high above the town and several mosques – Ulu Camii (Great Mosque), Donenler Camii (Rotating Mosque), Ishak Fakih mosque, and Kursunlu mosque. But overall the town seemed sort of dilapidated, dusty, abandoned, and off the tourist path, and yet interesting to explore. Narrow labyrinth of streets winds around the old town with houses with overhanging balconies – easy to get lost here.
