Turkey: Xanthos
You can get lost in all the Greek and Roman archaeological sites along the Turkish Mediterranean coast, but some of them truly stand out. Like the UNESCO World Heritage site of Xanthos! Xanthos was the capital of ancient Lycia, often referred to as “the oldest republic in the world.” This league of 20 cities was governed by a popular assembly and a president who ruled from Xanthos. Set in a beautiful hilltop location, it boast a theater, an agora, and an acropolis – all surrounded by expansive walls dating to the 3rd century BC. But the most spectacular is a the Hellenistic city gate and the Nereid Monument, both with rich decorations. And last but not least are wildflowers! In November!
