Turkmenistan has the fourth largest gas reserves in the world after Russia, Iran, and Qatar (although Turkmenistan claims the proven reserve figure is 4 times higher making Turkmenistan the world’s largest in terms of gas reserves. Turkmenistan is a major producer and exporter of both gas and oil and most of it is concentrated in the eastern part of the country along the Caspian Sea. As you drive in this remote area – it’s just an endless sea of oil and gas pumps tireless working on extracting the black gold and the accompanying gas. Interestingly, the amount of methane gas that escapes into the atmosphere in Turkmenistan is higher than the entire carbon emission footprint of Great Britain.
