Turks & Caicos: : Conch Farm
The world’s only conch (pronounced as “konk”) farm is located in Caicos. The conchs are grown here from microscopic eggs (each adult conch releases 50000 eggs) to baby shells (conversion happens at 1 month) to 4-year old conchs. At this point they are harvested for food. The first two years they are growing in controlled artificial ponds and are fed algae. The last two years they live in the open ocean. While the farm itself is not that spectacular, you still learn a lot about the animals and how they look and grow. Quite bizarre! I later ate the raw conch sashimi at a nearby restaurant – pics coming in the food recap post later.
