UAE/Fujairah: Awhala Fort
Fujairah, the last of the UAE emirates I haven’t seen before, boasts several beautiful Islamic forts from the 16-18th century. Awhala fort is located inland on the northern edge of the Hajar Mountains. It was built around 1800 on a place of a much earlier fortification dating to 8th century BC! The fully restored fort has a round tower and a rectangular courtyard – a classic “Islamic fort” look. You are more then certain to have the entire grounds to yourself and after climbing to the top of the tower – you get absolutely stunning panoramic views of the wadi below and mountains in the distance in all directions.
