Uganda: Kibale NP – Hiking in Bigodi Swamp
Kibale Forest National Park protects a large chunk of primary (never been cut) equatorial evergreen forest, one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It is often referred to as the “primate capital if the world” as it has large numbers of chimpanzee and 12 other species of primates – the highest concentration of primates in the world. A hike in the Bigodi swamp (or around it) yielded several monkey species – black & white colobus, red colobus (favorite meal for chimps!), ever present and annoying olive baboons, the elusive and shy L’Hoest monkey, and equally rare red-tailed monkey. Add spectacular birds – like woodland kingfisher, African blue flycatcher, hornbills and more.
