Uganda: Rwenzori NP – Heather Zone

As you climb up above 10k feet, Rwenzori Mountains turn surreal – massive heather and senecio trees covered head to toe in thick moss. It’s unlike anything I have ever seen anywhere else! Orchids bloom in the moss, thick fog often shrouds mountain slopes, and the whole landscape looks like another planet. Also managed to spot the super rare Rwenzori turaco – a large colorful bird. The landscape was beyond outlandish – perhaps this is why they call them mountains of the moon. Especially dramatic are the views of a full moon rising over the heather trees, as well as the sunrise in the morning!
