Uganda: Rwenzori NP – Alpine Zone

Above 12,000 feet there are no more heather trees – it’s an alpine zone of thin air, tussock grass, dozens of semi frozen lakes, and towering granite mountains in all directions. It’s very wet and muddy here as the soil just sucks in all the moisture. Here and there lonely senecio trees and lobelias cope with cold. Everything here freezes overnight. The Bugata camp is located at 4,062 meters (12,780 feet) high on a cliff with insane panorama of lakes and mountains in all directions. The sunrise is early at this elevation and it is blood red!
