Ukraine: Chyhyryn – The Hetman Residence
Chygyryn is the historic town in the Cherkasy Oblast that from 1648 to 1676 was the capital of the Cossack Hetmanate, an independent Cossack state. Bogdan Khmelnytskyi, today – the main national hero of Ukraine – was the hetman here and built the residence fortress in Chyhyryn. The residence and fortress were destroyed during Russo-Turkish wars, but have been meticulously restored and now hold one of the most important and sacred historical museums in the country. The beautiful Trinity church was destroyed by the Soviets, but has also been fully restored.
