Ukraine: Mukachevo – St Nicholas Monastery
The spectacular St Nicholas Monastery lies on the outskirts of Mukacheve and is totally stunning. The Easter Orthodox Christian monastery was founded some time in the 11th century and from the 15th century it was the seat of eastern orthodoxy for the entire Carpathian region. In the 1920’s, Soviet regime closed the monastery and exiled all 6,000 monks that were here. Today, it’s a functioning female monastery again with only a dozen nuns living here. There are three major churches and buildings here, most dating to the 1700s.
